Just wanted to say that I've been enjoying reading through the posts on this forum. It's nice to see a group of like-minded, intelligent, and civilized people creating this community.

I'm a 30 year old male who currently lives outside Buffalo, New York. My ancestry is mostly German with some Irish as well.

I am new to Odinism, but I admit I've felt Odin's call for some time now (most of my life to be honest). The desert religion Christianity had it's strong grip on me until recently. I think with having just turned 30, I've spent more time reconsidering everything. I'm at a point where taking that "next step" seems right. (Please bare with me as I have a lot to learn compared to many here!)

Currently I've been listening to a lot of the "Odin Lives Radio" archives, reading "Myths of the Norsemen" (HA Guerber), "The Saga Of The Icelanders" (Jane Smiley), and "The Norse Myths" (Kevin Crossley-Holland). There's a long list of books which I've seen recommended here that are going to be purchased soon.

So that's a brief introduction, and again I look forward to becoming a part of this community.

This mirrors my experience exactly.

Thanks again everyone for the welcome! :D

Ratatosk - It's good to hear that others have gone through something similiar. I pretty much grew up in the church. My immediate family was involved in various different Christian ministries.

I left the church when I was 14 only to go back and forth on the issue without ever being liberated from it completely until recently (this included being what I considered a "solitary Christian" who believed in that faith but rejected the organized church-going aspect to "trying" very hard to fit in within many different denominations). None of it felt honest. So I'm thankful to the Gods that I've finally been liberated from the desert religion.

It feels good to be free! I wouldn't say I'm "open" with it too much yet aside from wearing a Mjollnir around my neck. But I feel a huge weight lifted from me, and excitement for the future in Odinism.

I understand your feeling of freedom. I was always confused over which denomination to join, and wracked my brain trying to figure out whose doctine would save me from roasting in hell. I also lost faith in the churches and went "independent" for a while. Eventually, my wife (a sometimes Wiccan) introduced me to paganism.

More than anything else, reading these articles helped me make up my mind in favor of Asatru.

I left behind Christianity pretty young, too, as well at the age of 14, wandered between different spiritualities, arrived at Asatru with roughly 15 1/2. Now I am 17. I would consider myself to have grasped most ideas, but in some areas I am still a raw egg; just takes time to be fully integrated in all procedures, I'd say; maybe in 2 or 3 years time I will know almost any aspect of it.
You'll make it eventually to know a lot about Odinism, confident about that, if you are committed (important!). I think it is easier however, the younger you are that you are enlightened to resume the way of your ancestors.

The way I look at it, there's no use in rehashing why it took so long for me to completely leave behind the desert religion. The future is much more important, the future is Odinism!
