WE discussed this a bit on the old board. It's sometimes called "the viking game"

I've got the pieces for a game but on trying to play it I discovered I misplaced the board.

I don't suppose any one has got one to sell????

You can make one of your own....at the recent family picnic I attended with my kids one of the booths was "How to play Tafl" where the boards were handmade...I will see if I can post the direction :)

Are there any online guides on how to play? Or books for that matter?

Yes, the link I gave passes you to a page with rules, boards, and links to java/applet enabled online games!!!!!!

(Will we have the Internet in Valhalla? If not, how will I endure an eternity without it??? :( ;) )

Wow, I completely missed that. :( Lack of sleep + disease = mental zombification

Thanks for pointing it out!

Well thanks a lot Andy, I'd never heard of this game before and now you've got me hooked! ;) What a great game.

I made a board out of a piece of large paper, used a 2p piece for the king, 12 five pence pieces for the King's bodyguards and 24 1p pieces for the attackers. (I knew that money jar that I've been saving for ages would come in handy one day.)

Me and the wife played six games and whoever was playing as the king always won. But a stategy for the attackers was making itself obvious during those games and when my wife used it on our seventh game, she won and captured my king. But it took her the best part of an hour and a half to beat me so I think my viking credentials are still in tact!

A good site I found that explains the rules very simply was:

Andy,

Did you get a Hnefatafl board? I ask because Viking Crafts have them very cheap and plus Mike is an excellent chap!

Is it a Viking version of Chess??

I suppose you could call it that but it isn't Viking and that would be a very limited description of it. Besides, I can never get my head around Chess! :p

there is a site called www.brainking.com and there you can play a game called Tablut, this is imo one of the best versions i have seen so far of the game.

I'm still looking for a good site for the rules ect. I'll make a topic about it in a couple of days how to play it, where to get it ect
so keep an eye out for that post those who are interested

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tafl_games

Hnefatafl is, but there are apparently other tafl games that were spread over the Germanic world. None of these were based on chess.
