A pretty horrible introduction I thought. I can only assume this was Asatru, it just refered to it as "the Vikings" or "the Viking religion". This was a group based in San Francisco. When he went into the Gyða's (she just called herself a priestess) house she quoted something along the lines of Havamal 2. Then she made him drink mead through a pair of her underwear, saying it was a traditional way to drink it and made it more sacred. I've never heard of this before. She talked about a kobold that lived in her cupboard for a while. Then it was off to their "veneration of the dead ceremony" which looked like it was held on a wharf. I think this might have been their Einherjar Blot, although it looked like a Sumbel. She mentioned Einherjar once, and pointed out the "Odin horn". She had a horn with runestaves around it. Then they began toasting the fallen. One guy toasted "all the animals that die in slaughterhouses - even though I'm not a vegetarian". Then John Safran toasted Jammaster Jay of Run DMC and they all agreed, one woman saying he was a great artist. I think I saw an African guy there, so they might have been Universalists. Hopefully it got some people interested though. The brief intro was okay, it wnet alog the lines of "Vikings...pre-Christian Scandanavia...Odin and Thor...If you thought the Viking religion was dead, think again".

The episode is listed on the site here (http://www6.sbs.com.au/johnsafranvsgod/index.php?action=about). It's episode 6, but it doesn't even mention the Asatru part in the summary, I guess it was just meant as a quirky filler.

It was a funny series, but I cringed when I saw that on T.V. Asatru hardly ever makes it onto T.V. and that is what people will see (probably for the first time) what it is like. Why the hel they would toast to Groucho Marx when they could toast to proper heathen heroes is beyond me:mad:

I love it how he takes the **** out of all the people who are anti-American just because Michael Moore told them to be.

We havn't seen the whole series but apparently it comes up again briefly when he goes to Bob Larson in the final episode:

Bob Larson: You’re walking fly-paper for demons.

John Safran: I was involved in a Day of the Dead celebration for the Viking religion, the Norse Odinism, is that a problem?

Bob Larson: It’s a big problem. Odin is a very powerful demon.

John Safran: And when I was in India, I worshipped a goddess.

Bob Larson: Kali?

John Safran: Definitely Kali, but was it a Mah goddess, Goddess Mah? That’s an issue?

Bob Larson: It’s a big issue. It’s all false gods. John, I’m not even a third of a way through this thing. You could have every demon on this planet inside you.

It first aired in Australia 18th October 2004, it would have been closer to one.

Yeah, it's been replayed on TV three or four times, now (including the first time).

The exorcism is hilarious... this nutty Southern (but that could have been a put-on accent) exorcist slapping Safran around, and abusing him, you know, 'chastising the demon'. Hard to tell if it was a sham or not, but it was funny.

Interesting, Where could I download the episode for the Asatru one?I don't know but you can buy the DVD here (http://www.madman.com.au/actions/catalogue.do?releaseId=4522&method=view). You could probably get it from any decent shop that sells DVDs really. It's worth owning IMO.
