Tubingen, Germany - A stone phallus 28 000 years old has been discovered in a cave in Baden-Wuertemberg in southern Germany, according to archeologists with the University of Tubingen.

In assembling 14 stone fragments found last year in the Hohle Fels cave, archeologists rebuilt the phallus, which is 20cm long and 3cm wide.

It will be on display at the prehistoric museum in Blaubeuren.

From that post:

"Its life size suggests it may well have been used as a sex aid by its Ice Age makers, scientists report."

This sort of thing always makes me laugh. How on earth can you even begin to put forward opinions on the sex life of a civilization, that you know next to nothing about, that lived 28,000 years ago?! The phallus might have been used as a weapon, a doorstop, anything!

I'm sure historians who look at British policeman's standard issue truncheon in 28,000 years time will insist that it was a part of the ancient English's kinky sex games! :D

Lol yeah I can see it now.... Viking man yells across house.. "Honey I need to hold open the door, wher is that big stone penis at, you have laying around?" .. actually the egyptians were known to make them out of wax and clay, as did the romans for sexual aids, so anything is possible...

How do you know how much they know, unless you're also an expert in this field? I don't see anything wrong with saying it might have been used as a sex aid, it's certainly a possibility.

A phallus is, by definition, a representation of a penis. So what's it most likely to have been used for? I don't think it was a doorstop since caves don't have doors. And it doesn't look very weapon-like, it's not sharp, and it's a pretty small club. With ridges deliberately carved into one end to make it look even more like an erection.

Just after the part you quoted it also says it was used for knapping flints. Why question it's use as a sex aid but not as a flint knapper?

I think this looks alot more like a penis than a truncheon.

Personally I would be sceptical more because they assembled it from 14 fragments. But they look like they fit together pretty well.

that could have been where it cracked and was put back onWell the article says
Researchers believe the object's distinctive form and etched rings around one end mean there can be little doubt as to its symbolic nature. If it was a crack they would know.

Surely you could see my post was meant to humorous? I thought it was pretty obvious that I was having a laugh. Or so I thought... :D

Nope, thought you were serious. I wonder if this should really be called a Germanic phallus since as far as I know the Germanic branch of Indo-European mythology didn't emerge untill about 2000 BC. Could this be our earliest glimpse of Ingwaz/Ing/Ingui/Yngvi/Freyr? I'm not aware of an Indo-European god he can be traced to.

Germanic because it belonged to a Germanic people maybe? It doesn't have to be tied to mythology.

But that's what I'm getting at, Germanic people didn't emerge from the Indo-Europeans untill about 2000 BC as far as I'm aware.
