Thinking about making myself a scottish highland games hammer to work out on and get in better shape with. Something like the picture shown at the bottom. Anyone know of any good online places where they teach you what to use? I was thinking about a good extremely strong and solid peice of wood or even a steel bar for the handle then making a small box out of wood to fill with rocks, sand and cement then letting it dry and using thick concrete to cover the end and make it rounder. I want to make the hammer about 30lbs.
What do you guys think?

Using my picture without permission, tut tut.
Some info here:
THE SCOTTISH HAMMER
The Scottish hammer is quite different from the Olympic wire hammer. The Scottish hammer head is a round metal ball attached to a rattan cane handle. Two different weights are thrown; sixteen and twenty-two pounds. The athletes wear blades on the front of their throwing boots and dig them into the ground to have a firm foundation for the effort. With their back facing the direction of the throw, the athlete whirls the hammer around his head, building momentum and then releasing.

Try a long builders' 'Lump Hammer'...although not technically round, they have a similar weight and areodynamics.

I used to play a hammer toss game with friends at get togethers. We would get a Sledge and saw off the handle( to about 12 or 14 inches). Not traditional but it was fun and quite a work out if you payed for a while. We also threw in front of us.

The wooden box mould idea would work. You may need a bit of lead or something to bring the weight up whilst keeping the end a sensible size.
YOu will also need to drill a whole in the end of the shaft and put a rod through to provide a key for the sand and cement. Actually I think concrete would be best here too as mortar is not so hard wearing.

Aye, This is a crappy rough draft I made in paint on what I think id do:

I know its crappy but thats my idea. The bars through the bottom of the handle will be steel and the whole bottom of the handle going into the cement will be wrapped with strong copper wire wrapped all around. The ball will be a decent size, I will put wet sand inside it to test the weight and maybe use a bigger ball. We've got a bunch of old baseketballs, big and small here I could cut the tops out of to find the right size and weight with :p After its been finished maybe ill get a friend I know to have his father coat the whole outside with this clear fiberglass liquid finish stuff he has. I'll spraypaint the cement before its coated.
What do you guys think of that plan? Sounds alright to me for something home made :D

Hvedrungr, try this link:

I think they have links to pages on sources etc.
I did some training with them a few years ago and tried my hand at the hammer toss - it's harder than it looks, alot more technique than strength required! I'm a stout guy at about 255lbs, and mich lighter guys were throwing way farther. But I only practiced a few times.
