The following is from a letter I received from a Federal Inmate this week...
Feel free to pass this along as you see fit...

************************************************

You need to be made aware that the approved book, audio, and video list been issued to the FBOP Religious Services Dept. This list is the BOPs reaction to the Congressional Hearings held in Sept. 2006 where the self-proclaimed counter terrorism expert Daveed Gartenstein-Ross testified that subversive religious material is being sent to inmates via charitable organizations, in particular Muslim organizations.

The "expert" on paganism i.e., Asatru, Odinism, Wicca, Druidism, etc. is Sister Susan Van Balin (ph. spelling). She is a Catholic Nun working for the BOP Central Office as a religious advisor. We have noted that the Catholic approved material list is about an inch thick while the Pagan list is about one quarter of that size.

It is my understanding that this list can be modified in the coming months. There are some books we would like to see added to this list and would hope that some of our people from the streets will take the time to contact the BOP and try to advise this "expert".

Books that are NOT on the list include:

The Mask of Odin by Titchnell
The Poetic Edda - Hollander translation
Futhark by Thorsson
Heimskringla by Snorri
The Icelandic Sagas
Egils Saga
Njals Saga
Flateyarbok
The Orkneyinga Saga
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles
Beowulf
and other various sagas and books as you deem appropriate.

So do we talk to the sister to get certain books approved?

Thanks for posting this!

Hi Kathy~

Richard Kemp, over at Sheridan, sent out the form letter posted by Lonnie. He, Richard, will know who to talk to. He's in your group, yes? The Sister in Washington is not so bad, and can be understanding. Maybe we could put together a letter to her and suggest the Book of Blotar as well as some other books not on the list.

Yes he is, but I haven't been in since before the baby was born (last couple months of the pregnancy and then labor/delivery/recovery :)) Anyway, we are planning on going to our annual training in April and getting back on the horse!

Yes, definitely, I was thinking BoB, Odinic Mythology 1 and 2, ORB, etc... Also, the OR really needs to get on the approved vendor list or whatever it is called.

Sister Van Balin is a reasonable person and, if there is difficulty with getting these additional books added, PM me because I am personally acquainted with someone who is friends with her that we could go through. The other information I heard, besides the book list, is that they are going to impose certain requirements of those who go into the prisons to help with the religious gatherings. Like some kind of proof of "certification" in that religion which, of course, would be more difficult with Asatru groups. Z.

That certification requirement already exists. They required it from me back when i went into federal...

Hmmm all I needed was letters of recommendation, but that was 6 years ago....I have let things lapse since having the baby (7 kids have really cut into any extra time), but there is another training session coming up....I will call before I go to ensure I don't need anything new!
