The Odinic Rite is looking to get the book drive for prisoners going again. Does anyone here have any interest in donating appropriate books in fair condition for this? If there is sufficient interest in this first step then I'll go ahead and gather up a list of possible recipients. You can post here or send an e-mail to Odainsacre_Hama_AOR@hotmail.com

I hope that there are enough people willing to donate, as many of our imprisoned kindred need books and other reading material. Thanks.

Sounds good bro. I'll make this thread a sticky so people see it. Don't think I have any books I could donate since im still trying to absorb knowledge but im sure there are a few people on the board who could help out :)

I will post some messages and articles by some of our brothers on the inside later that will hopefully show how serious these people are about our faith and how positive it is for them.

Hopefully they will show those who are unsure of whether we should be working with prisoners that initiatives such as this book drive are whorthwhile.

I don't have any books to donate but I will pony up $100 for purchase of them for donation or as best needed.

Please PM me to arrange this as and when convenient. :)

Can the OR do a mass printing of INTERVIEW WITH A GOTHI cheap or some thing???

I think thats a book we ought to give away like Christians give away the bible :)

I don't have books to donate, but I would be willing to donate $100 to this project. Will that work? To what address can I send it?

I suggest what I did:

1) Get SOmerled's address by PM from him

2) Buy books from the OR site online at http://www.********rite.org/books.html

3) Add a note in the Paypal message box to send to his address.

But S may have better ideas :)

How is the book drive coming along, Somerled?

Somerled

Pretty good. I'm expecting the first wave of books any day now. There have also been a couple people who are putting down quite a few bucks. They know who they are and we thank them for thier generosity.

Once we get those in then the second phase of distribution will start.

I'd personaly like to thank everyone who has contributed. It's another example of how we can function as a true community.

Ok folks, the Odinic Rite book drive for the Prison Outreach Wing was quite a success. We received many book donations and a boatload of requests from inmates. We would like to thank all those who donated. Your help is invaluable. It’s now time for round two, so if you have any appropriate books you would like to donate, please feel free to do so. Note that the address to send them to has changed.

Some people think that prisoners do not deserve our support. For those of you of this mindset I would like to give you this to think about. By providing inmates with the necessary tools for spiritual growth, we are not only helping them, but also the community as a whole. A person who is able to evolve on a spiritual level is less likely to engage in anti-social behavior once outside the wire. Yes, they did the crime, they do the time, but by providing them with these tools we also help those on the outside who would benefit from a reformed prison population. Just something to mill over.

Please send any donations of books to:

Odinic Rite Prison Outreach Wing
C/o Odainsacre Hama AOR
P.O. Box 98311
Raleigh, NC 27624

Any questions, comments or concerns may be directed to me at the above address or SomerledMacD@hotmail.com and please feel free to spread this around to groups, forums, friends, etc.

For Faith, Folk & Family,

Somerled MacDougall AOR

There's no real point my sending books cos the postage from the UK is more than they cost.

How about donations?? Got a paypal maybe???

What I would suggest is buying books on eBay or on the used section of Amazon and having them shipped to Somerled directly.. Sometimes you can find books for just a few pennies each on these sources (even though shipping will usually be a few dollars).

I think we may start accepting small monetary donations for postage, as it costs more than I expected. Anyone who wants to help out in that regard shoot me a PM or an e-mail.

To all concerned, the book drive is still on and is a continuous thing. It's being handled by Odainsacre Hearth so if you have any questions or concerns contact either myself or Blackantlers.

This book drive is supported 100% by donations from the Odinic community.

Do you have something set up for prisoners in states like Michigan who can only get books from approved vendors such as B&N and Amazon??

If you do, can we donate $$ to have books sent to prisoners in our own states? I'd be willing to donate funds when you have a request from a Michigan prisoner.

We've gotten around that before because it's religious material, but I've never tried with MI institutions.

We don't have anything official set up, but we'll do whatever it takes to get books to them, including buying them from Amazon.

I have a thing with monetary donations because they must be paid to me personaly and there's always the possibility of accusations of impropriety. Our hearth has yet to get a bank account so any checks must be made out to me, which kinda feels weird.

Of course if people wish to make monetary donations they can. Postage can be a pain when we're sending out a lot of books (for a library or whatever). Like I said the check needs to be made out to "Somerled MacDougall" or through my personal Paypal account, "SomerledMacD@hotmail.com". I'll also accept gold boullion, jewels, or your first born.

Certainly. Someone sent a few books of stamps and we put them to good use (the entire side of the package was covered in stamps). We definately need postage.

In a lot of prisons, the books can get to Odinists through the chaplain (who usually is Christian but they still have to forward the books) as religious material. So if folks can tell the prisoners writing in for books to include the method by which they could receive religious books, that may help prevent returned books and wasted postage. Zelda

Yes, it's very important that we know the policies of the institution regarding the receipt of material.

Anthony just packed up 13 packages of books to be sent off tonight. Any books people have will still be sent so keep them coming. There have also been a few people asking about just sending funds for shipping. That would be acceptable as well as currently this cost is coming out of the hearth cash account.

Thanks to everyone for thier support.

I can relate... The postage cost tends to add up when sending lots of stuff out... I have to start getting the $$ for the Oct. issue of the journal we send out... :o

Heill Somerled,

Do you want me to get on the horn to Coalinga and find out what the problem is? CDC has some screwy rules, hoops, chutes and ladders that they want everyone to obey, run, jump, climb and swim through. This is part of the reason for there being a lack of volunteers to go into the prison systems out here. That may all be changing if this present case is won.

Most of these guys have discovered Odinism whilst inside and it has turned their lives around. They are different people with noble ideals and a deep sense of honour. Many come out as valuable members of society.

As you would expect, few of them were already Odinist when they were incarcerated. Whilst we would support an Odinist who was imprisoned for something honourable (defence of his family, retaliation for harming a child etc), we would be unlikely to give support to an Odinist who was imprisoned for a dishonourable act.

But of course every "crime" has a set of circumstances so it is not always black and white. Fortunately we can apply common sense rather than the letter of the law.

Hail Comrade!
Good to see others that are helping out our brothers and sisters behind the wire. There are some good folk out there that just got wrapped up in BS! There are some knuckleheads too. I have personally seen both, I have three oath brothers that have done well since they got out. Two in particular have done extremely well! Hopefully in about 4 years I will be able to say four oath brothers. Prison is an odd environment, you have the good, the bad and the ugly. As an Odinist Volunteer I see it all. I volunteer out at Kern Valley (New Delano), just started again and it is a world within itself! A comrade of mine lives in Gilbert and I think he has joined the OR? Maybe you could give me a hollar and you all could meet up. He is a good fellow, no criminal history just a working class Odinist.
