Hi
My last name is really German, and I've always known what it meant, but never REALLY thought about what it MEANS. My Dad, joyous old pagan that he is, pointed this out for me.
My last name is "von der Heyde." It's a historical corruption of
"von der Heide," meaning "Of the meadow," or, more literally, "Of the heath." Get it? My name is "Karl of the Heath," or, more localized, "Karl the Heathen." And "Karl" is a whole social class of Nordic people.
My Dad rocks.

Catherwood :
(origin: Gaelic. Local) A fenny-wood, wet ground, from Cathar, soft, boggy ground; or the fortified place in a wood, from Cathair, Gaelic, a town, a fortified city, a guard, a sentinel.

Cathell
English: unexplained.

That's about as close as I can get, apart from a bloke that sells stuff on ebay with the same surname as you. Sorry :(

grr the internet is useless at times

I think my name came from a trade of my ancestors... 'Clark' maybe worked for someone, being a Clerk, and changed to Clark, oh well, iv searched and searched and searched, but i never found out :(
EDIT: I found a meaning: Definition: Cleric, clerk, or scholar - one who can read and write. Also from the Gaelic "Mac a' Chlerich/Cleireach"; son of the cleric or, sometimes, clerk. During the Middle Ages, the common pronunciation of -er was -ar, so the man who sold items was the marchant, and the man who kept the books was the clark. At the time, the primary members of the literate class were the clergy, which in minor orders were allow to marry and have families. The term clerk eventually (clark) came to designate any literate man.

Well, I like my surname, Schernthaner, quite a lot. It comes from OHG (or was it MHG? :P) schern , star; and than , lord. (The latter part is still seen in today's English word "thane"). Well, so it's "Starthane"/"Starlord". I believe that I explained in another topic, that this could well point towards astrology and that a former bearer of the name was one who, possibly even religiously, dealt with the stars.

Well...

Finally tracked down the meaning of my name!

"(English) Belonging to Catterall (Lancs) anc. Caterall, caterhal / caterhale, = probably Cater's or Cathere's Hall [Old English hall / heall] (rather than the '(Wild) Cat Slope or Corner,' from the Low German cater or kater, a tom-cat, and Old English hal / heal, a slope, a corner)."

Could be worse :D

Mine is Courter. Corrupted from Dutch "Coerten" (Coert's son) in the mid 1600's when my grandfather X 11 came over here with his family on the ship "Der Trouw" (The Faith).

My name is 'Clayton'. Meaning from one of the several places named Clayton in England. Also means Settlement or Enclosure.

I suppose that at some point my relatives lived in Clayton, based on where my Clayton parental line comes from I'd imagine its the Clayton in Yorkshire.
