View Full Version : Mjollnir, Why do you wear it?

If you wear Thors hammer around your neck tell us why. I personally wear it as a sign of my Odinic faith, my loyalty to the gods especially Thor as I see him to be my patron god. I allso wear it as a protoection symbol, sort of a good luck cham. It has been a somewhat good conversation starter in the past but has allso gotten me into many debates and arguments with Christians and other non Heathens. I would never take my hammer from around my neck unless it was becasue a doctor asked me to or I had to clean it. Besides that it never comes off.
I have a picture of my hammer collection so I will post it:

The one I wear all of the time is on the far right, it is the "Kabbara" hammer from the Wodanesdag Press (www.odin.org) located in British Columbia, Canada. If you get a chance visit their online store, amazing selection of hand made Mjollnir pendants!
The one on the far left is one ive never really worn so I sent it to a friend in Ireland as a gift. The second one is the first hammer I ever owned and I plan on giving that one to the special woman I end up spending my life with (whoever she is :D ) and the second last one beside the Kabbara hammer is a smaller hammer I sent to my friend Angella in Greece, hopefully that got to her safely. I guess I cant really call it a hammer collection as ive sent two away as gifts but oh well.
Tell us why you wear Mjollnir and post a picture of your hammer if you've got one

I never take mine off unless it's absolutely necessary. I get that weird uncomfortable naked feeling.

I wear a simple hammer I picked up at a Renascence fair a while back from a lovly merchant I can only describe as a crazy old fart :D .
It is simple and unornate a welcome contrast to the many look alike hammers I see.I only take it off for cleaning and showers when I replace the cord for a chain its never coming off.
I see it as a sign of strength, courage and faith.
PS.I like the hammer in Norsk Blods Sig

When I first put on my hammer it was the moment I was sure that this was the right path for me.
I never take it of but once lost it in the street whilst working. I didn't realise until I got home and had to retrace my journey all over London. Just as I thought I had lost all hope there it was lying at the side of the road. The chances of nobody seeing it were slim and I take it as a sign that I was meant to find it. It could never have been replace as it is a one-off that I made myself.
I also hallowed it with the following (slightly altered from th Book of Blotar):
In the name of the High Gods, the Aesir and Vanir - May this hammer be made holy. May you imbue it with your power. Grant me your blessings and your aid. I hail you. Hail Faith Folk and Family.

I don't wear it. Initialy I didn't wear it because I thought I might dishonour my ancestors unless I had a very detailed understanding of the Mjollnir and our faith. I don't wear it now because I don't see why I need it, or how wearing it will make me a better Odinist.

I too wear my hammer(sometimes plural) as a symbol of my faith (I have a mjolnir tattoo on my upper left arm also) and to remind me of the oath I made to the gods. My grandparents, who know nothing of my faith in the aesir, know that it's a symbol of the thunder god of scandinavian mythology, and know I am basically obsessed with the mythology, but don't know about my dedication to it, and the gods. I don't think they really need to know right now. I too have lost a hammer, which I eventually found, but I ordered another that very same day I lost it, because I was so upset. I am bespoken to Woden first of all, with the valknut and ravens tatooed on my arm, but I honor also his son the Thunderer. I wear a replica of an artifact found in Uppland,Sweden. It symbolizes protection, strength and honor, and good luck for me, a visible symbol of heathen troth. I also laid it in my bride's lap when we were married, must have worked as we are expecting our first-born son any day now, as previously noted on prior incarnations of this forum. I never take the hammer off, it is with me at all times.

Lets see these tattoos Beowulf!!! I was actually wanting to tattoo a raven on the back of both of my shoulders. I feel a real pull toward that animal.
As for hammers; I have several. Each mean different things. I have a small silver one that I never take off but, like some of you, I lost it once. The chain just undid at work. I freaked out looking for it. Finally a coworker handed it to me saying that it was sitting right in the office in front of everything. They always seem to find their way back to whom they need to. Hmm, sort of like our faith.

Hail All!
Mine is from my husband. He gifted it to me on a trip to Idaho. I wear it because it is a symbol of my Faith. It is an outward expression of what is felt deeply. Also, it is a conversation starter....I know several fundi christians that have a different perspective on Odinism simply because they asked..."What is that necklace?" Always, great to educate folks.
As to the above comments...I was a heathen for several years before I was given my hammer...I don't think it is a "requirement" per se, but I do think it is an important symbol of our Ways...that is our dedication to our Elder Kin. Sorta like saying we have dedicated our lives to our Faith, Folk, and Family (including ancestors and successors). It is a powerful to pronounce such a dedication.
As for "making a better Odinist"...hmmm...Deeds make one a better person...not religious symbols.
I agree with your last statement. I have a big problem with folks thinking they have to "know it all" regarding our Ways before they can "wear a hammer" or "proclaim to be an Odinist"....personally...I think it is hogwash. There is no amount of books one can read that he/she could then say "I know everything and now can call myself an Odinist (Heathen, Asatruar, etc...)". Once you have answered the call of the Gods and Goddesses and follow the Ways of your ancestors...you are an Odinist...all the lore, sagas, Eddas, etc... are your NEXT steps in the journey of better understanding your ancestors and yourself.
Don't get me wrong, I think it is very important to read about your ancestors...it is the spark that ignites the flame of our Folk, but to say you aren't an Odinist till you have read X number of books...well that is ridiculous.
Ok..sorry for the rant!

I don't know if you carry out any blots or rituals or if you have a regular site to do such but if so you may wish to consider giving it as an offering to the wights of that place. You could make a small ceremony of it, thanking them for sharing that space with you and then bury it there. For example:
In the name of the High Gods,
I offer this hammer as a gift to the wights and spirits of this place.
May it be a sign of my thanks to them for sharing this place with me.
May it also offer protection from those who would bring harm to them.
Or something similar.
Or perhaps you could make a gift of it to some one recently turned to Odinism (if you are sure they are serious about it)

Heilsa,
I wear a hammer 24/7. I don't have a pic to show of it, but essentially it has a warriors helm on the tip of the haft and a valknot lower between the ends of the hammer. On the reverse, it has a bindrune (my sigil) of the Ken and Eiwaz Runes.
i made it from pewter and I wear it on a chain of woven copper wire I made myself. The making of it was one of the most gratifying things I have ever done and made my faith stronger than ever before. It's not just a symbol to me.... it's an anchor to my existence in Midgardh.

I dunno. Whatever significance the Mjollnir has for anyone else, I had always thought of it as a warrior's sort of talisman; and while I'm a capable fighter and won't shy away from fighting if I have to, essentially that's not my main role and it never has been.
A Mjollnir would not sit right around my neck, but the Algiz is just right.

I am right there with you. When I converted to Asatru/Odinism I began wearing my mjollnir in the same manner that I wore a cross as a Christian. One neat side benefits is that I tend to get asked questions about it by new aquantences & then get a good chance to share the folkways with them.

The hammer I wear was made by my own hands and I am very proud of it ...I am living in a country that the most are christians and always have my hammer out of my clothes to show my belief and really don't care if they think that "I am a *bad* girl or even a *weird* one" or look at me "somehow"...I wear my hammer for protection as Thor is the protector of humanity, also for strength and health.
PS I get very disappointed from someone user before some days, cause in a private conversation we had, he said to me that I have to regard and believe the Gods of my country...but I don't give up my religion cause no one is able to tell me what is right or wrong for myself (or else I would be a christian as it's the most widespread here)...I can listen everyones opinion (with examples, with thoughts, etc), but I am the one that in the end will chose my path...so please no more..."you should"
Thank you.

I'm about to buy another one, I think it's this one (http://www.handfaste.se/images/ha6.jpg) (the upper one) which is in silver and made after a hammer found on Gotland. But this one that I already have I like very much, I like that it's got a face. But variation is good, or I could wear two at once.

Hello everyone, My hammer was purchased for me by my better half, I wear it because of my belief in the God's. Its just your average hammer, eyes on top, vinage down below. Like most people here I only take it off to clean it and I feel naked with out it. I also have the Rune Alghiz tattooed on my back at the base of my neck, with a valknut to the left of it and a Hagalaz rune to the right. The world tree one with vertical line and a left and right slash. I dont know about anybody else but its quite a feeling to have symbols like that tattooed onto your body. You can feel the effect of them once you get them its pretty cool. Pyre

The Viking Answer Lady informed me that the original was found in Östergötland, Sweden, and is now in the Swedish National Antiquities Muesum.

I think I have decided now to stop going with the miniature and cheap "Made in Taiwan" one, and I will order one once I return to UK from Wodanesdag, probably. Current tendencies go towards the wolfshammer, IMO it's a beautiful one, dunno why, but simply caught my eye.

Hmmm....I'm not the master on the topic....but I'd say it's rather difficult. Well, probably basic blacksmithing style would not be so hard, I guess, but the fancy stuff, if you want it on, might be quite difficult to do.

Most of the ones we all wear are cast in a mould. If you want to do this yourself you make a wax model of what you want, cover it in clay, bake the clay, and pour in moten metal to the space left when the wax melts, oops better leave some holes!!!!!! I knew someone who did this but I guess google is your friend!!!

Fultrui or Fultru is a way of saying that a person is dedicated themselves to a single God/dess... Not that they forsake all the other Gods & Goddess's, just that they are bound to one in particular. IMHO, not a step one should take lightly... There are way to many Heathens out there who will proclaim to be Fultrui to one god and then several months down the line they find they are closer to another god at that point and say well I'm no longer fultrui to this god because I am now fultrui to this other god... Hence why it is one of the things that can get my hackles up...

What is the melting point for iron and/or lead? I assume that a gas hob would not be hot enough?

I agree totally. It is like people who choose a name to show their restoration to their faith and then change it several times.
Or people who are quite happy to spell Odin as Odin until they read a book where it is spelled Odinn and they almost wet themselves with excitement when they find they can add another letter to make it Odhinn! I won't mention the bodily functions involved when they discover Oðinn!
Just a couple of pet peeves.

If you are going to do this consult a professional or at least a reference work!!!!
I know lead can be melted over a gas flame but there are toxic fumes etc from it. Iron can not be melted.
I won't presume to say more, I am not an expert on this & might lead you dangerously astray.

Liffrea,
Lead can easily be melted even on the hob (stove top). A very thick piece of lead would take a while to melt however.
Melting iron requires a forge which is a specialized (but not necessarilly high-tech) piece of equipment. I'm sure you can find plans for a medieval type of forge on the web.
You could also carve a hammer from wood or amber as I have done.

Liffrea, you could try casting White Metal. It is used a great deal by model makers, is easy to melt and it harder than lead. It looks just like silver too.
You can create a master and then make a mould from it out of RTV rubber or similar.
I used to be an armoured vehicle modeller (before other things took over my life!) and used it to cast accessories such as jerry cans and oil drums etc.
I am sure a little research will throw up a site showing you how.

My Kabbara's in the mail, I had one a long time ago too, which I gave as a gift to someone.
I wore (and shall wear again!) a Mjollnir to symbolise my faith, and as a symbol of strength, cultural representation, and a focus for willworking.
I also intend on having the hammer tattooed on my person, most likely upon the backs of my hands, to symbolise the way I bring forth manifest energy into the world to shape it to my will.
Slightly unusual answer, methinks, but that's me.

Helisa.
I've a much different reason for wearing the hammer.
Personally, I feel little reason to wear "Symbols of faith." Such a thing has overtones of a defensive act, as if the person is trying to prove something by flaunting it. Just the same, I am not one to wear a symbol of protection, I prefer to rely on my own strengths to protect myself. The hammer that hangs around my neck is a personal thing, I wear it touching my skin at all times.
My reasons for wearing it: Firstly, I am completely true to Thor. Though I greatly respect the High Ones, my blood is the Thunderer's before all others. Second, keeping with the topic of blood, the weight of the hammer is a reminder of the hardships my forebearers had to endure for their family, and for me. It reminds me of all of my ancestors, those who's names I know, and those who I cannot name alike. And third, My ancestry is divided, and one of the very few things I have "found peace with" is heathenry. The hammer helps me keep my not-so-well-adjusted, and rather chaotic impulses (a result of the "gap" between my spiritual division), "in check". Like the calming of a torrent, almost.
Hail to the High Ones!
Hail to Thor!
Faith, Folk, Family.
(P.S., I will post a picture next month once I make my way up to NH and get the hammer permanently inked around my neck)

I wear the Mjollnir as symbol of spiritual identity, ethnic pride, etc. Perhaps even as an attempt to put Heathenism on par with the major world religions, the Thor's Hammer as a response to the Crucifix, Star of David, Crescent Moon, and that nine pointed star thing the Baha'is use.
I own the Rugged Thor's Hammer type ordered from Wodanesdag.

I have ordered from Wodanesday many a time, first by paypal (then I closed the account) and about 11 times after that by cash in the post. I have NEVER had a problem with that, type out the letter and wrap the money in the letter and another sheet of a4 paper and then celotape the envelope, NEVER had a problem!
If you really do not want to do that then I am sure the information is on the Royal Mail website. But, sending cash isn't a problem.

Thanks for the info anyway.... *thumbsup*

I wear it so that I can smack people with it. :D

It is the symbol of my way of life (I don't use the word faith...too xian). According to the lore, it was the most precious and valuable of all the gifts the dwarfs had created. I am also a Thorsman.

My Mjollnir gives me great strength, especially when having a hard day, and I where it with great pride as a symbol of my beliefs and heritage.
I find that the more that I learn about Odinism then the more certain i feel about the path i am on (especially in the face of many Christians at work, who only want you to get ahead if your in the right church and of a particular background (if you knwo what i mean ;) My Mjollnir, therefore, is a constant reminder of my beliefs, that takes on more significance with every passing week.
Now that i have worn it for some time I would like to hold a small ceremony dedicating myself to the Gods and 'powering' the Mjollnir.

Well, Me being the long haired freaky people I am usually have four or five pendants around my neck at any givin time, a few of them never change. I wear my hammer not so much for the magick as for the fact that I've always felt Thor's presence far more deeply while I'm working. To me it has always been a symbol of quiet strength and pride in doing your best at whatever job you do.

The Hammer I have now has been around my neck for close to 5 years now and is there as a constant reminder of my faith, my heritage and that someone is watching over me.
I got my current one after a tragic loss of my first Hammer which was about five years old and was tragically lost in an auto accident by some careless hospital attendant. Truth be told I was distraught because of the strong connection I felt with the charm from the moment I picked it up. Luckily while looking at some charms at a local store I received a similiar feeling with this charm and purchased it that moment even though I wasn't finished shopping. The shop keeper did look at me curiously as I came back a short while later with the rest of my purchases.

I wore Mjollnir from the time I was 16 to the time I was 24 (2 years ago), giving my Mjollnir to a friend of mine who was going to prison as a way to protect him. I have not yet gotten a replacement Hammer, but I do wear the Brisingamen of Freyja as my religious symbol. I wore Mjollnir as a symbol of my faith, obviously, in the Gods of my ancestors, especially in the protective aspects of Thor. Thor has saved my butt many times!
