The only way to get better at pull ups, is do more pull ups..
there is a thing called Ladders... You do one, then 2 then three etc etc...
Do them throug out the day, one here 2 there.. volume is the key.. pull downs, reverse curls and all that bs will not do it... DO MORE PULL UPS!!! :)

I agree completely with Teufy. The whole idea behind these exercises is not to be a goal you reach, but to be a means to a goal—even if the standard set by the military is a set one. And the only way you’re gong to reach it is to do it; to train your body to deal with it.

One way you can improve is by focusing on the negative aspect of the move, the decline. Lower yourself verry slowly, then pull back up if you can. If you can't, don't worry, climb up somehow and then lower slowly. Negative reps are good for moves you can't get a full rep out of, or only a handful. Actually, it's important to keep focus on your negative phase when your good at them too, it's damned annoying seeing people practically flop back down in the gym.

Also forgot, if it is the USMC you ara going for, and if they still allow it, do not get reliant on "kipping". it is a swining rythum for pull ups that is sort of a cheat... concentrate on getting as many on you rown as possible... When I was in you only had to do 3 for your IST, and then 6 for PFT... do not fret though they will ship you if you can not get them all out, and you WILL get better in boot..

Thank all of yall for your replies. Thats the one aspect thats kickin my butt. And yes, I am going in for the Corps. IST is only 2, but im damned and determined to ace my Fitness Test after basic, and that requires 20. I think I can do it if I stick with it. And draw strength runes all over my gear :p

Good luck with your training, another bit of advice I have is to "grease the groove". Do many pull ups throughout the day, or if this is not possible, then focus on getting a high volume of repitions. Training hard doesn't necessarily mean training to failure. The more pullups you do, the more you will be able to do later. Don't burn yourself out with a few sets of failure or near-failure results. Like others already said, focus on good form and complete each rep.
Check out dragondoor.com for some good advice on this kind of strength training.

Absolutely, do more pull-ups. Take it from someone that's been there. USMC of '92 Do more and that builds your upper body strength.
