A friend of mine just had a baby boy :) , I making her a baby quilt with Asatru related sacred plants and foods. She seems interested in Asatru and I think this is a good way to open up her thought and get her asking more questions to further her interest. The quilt is nine blocks w/ one plant/etc. per block. So far I have a sunflower, strawberrys, an apple and an oak leaf. I'm looking for plants/etc. in general not specific ones like a thisle to Scotland, things that are tied to all Asatru folk. Thier meanig would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

Are you open for including bees or honeycombs ---> honey, mead????
I know honey is not a plant, but mead is probably the thing that most closely corresponds to a sacred drink in our religion :)

Also off the top of my head, Leeks are in the Lay of Sigrdrifa.
I am sure there are tons...have you done a google search?
Edit: Congrats to your friend and what a great gift :D!

I'm not sure where sunflowers and strawberries come in, but I'd suggest including ash and yew leaves. 9 blocks is a good number to be using ;)

I think it would be a good idea to see if you can make a quilt with the Nine herbs of the Nine Herbs Charm, that would be a nice introduction to see if she's interested. Rather than trying to find nine things and putting them together, you have nine things already there, and the quilt would be an embodiement of the charm itself. Rather than something overt like a huge Valknut or an Othal Stave, just nine pictures of herbs and if she asks then you can just tell her about the charm and see if she bites. And if not, well it's still a protection against sickness.

Agreed, I was thinking honey bees but honeycomb never crossed my mind. That one is definetly in, thanks. I'll save the bees for a Asatru related animal quilt I had in mind.

I'm a quilting maniac, I'll do both. GOOD idea Scramaseax. The SUNflower(get it) is a sacred to heatens more in the area of what is Germany today...I think, not sure of the story behind it. thanks everyone.

Ensonulv,
I think you have a great idea. My mother is a quilter and is making a baby quilt for my brother's new son/daughter.
However you should know that the Sunflower is native to the Americas and brought as seed to Europe only in the 16th century. Perhaps you were thinking of another flower?

try chamomile or lavender. I'm still searching for the meanings. I do know these herbs are great for healing. signed santina77
