I saw a shallow bowl in a celtic themed cataloge w/ runes around the inside edge. Is a bowl a common item used in Asatru rites, If so what for?

They are used for Blots. The blessing bowls are usually for pouring a little bit of mead in and using a peice of a tree to turn clockwise and sprinkle each of the assembled people at the blot with the mead blessing them.

Well, even if you had been you may not have seen that. Not everybody does it.
When you hold a blot indoors you could use it as a trygil and place soil in it from a special place. You can make a toast to Mother earth and pour a libation into it. You could then return the soil to that place.
There are many good uses for a nice bowl.

It was originally blood from the sacrificed animal

I also have a large wooden salad bowl that a friend of mine burned runes and knotwork into that I use for runecastings.

I wouldn't be surprised if there where some really hardcore odinists out there that went out and got some blood from a butchers shop to use in such ceremonys as the Blot. But if the animal wasn't killed using sacrificial methods I guess using it's blood would be pointless. But then that would be no more pointless that using mead (unless the guy pouring the mead was sacrificed   )
As there are no definite rules for the ceremonys most is interpretation.

I would have to disagree with you on that point... Mead, when used, is generally home-made and thus different than that of store brought stuff... Now not all of us have the means to make home-made brew, for one reason or another. But it has been my exp. that things that have been made by an individual tend to much more accepting than something off the shelf at a store... I do it both ways, it depends on if we have anything home-made available or not, store purchased will work fine but as I said, it seems you get better results with something one has made personally...
As to the blood issue. To me, it would be sacralegious to use blood purchased from a butcher... There are alot of issues most do not take into consideration when making a "blood offering" (aka an Annimal Blot)... The Weoh issues of that type of sacrifice are not to be taken lightly. There is a right way to go about it, and many-many wrong ways... Luck, Maegen, Orlag all are vastly effected either for good or ill depending on if it is done right or wrongly... Not something for someone unexp'ed to be messing with, at least not anywhere around me or mine...
