PRESENTING RELIGION TO THE AMERICAN MASSES - LESSONS FROM THE
OPPOSITION?

Evangelical Christians are using new and daring ways to reach the
American public, and their efforts are proving hugely successful. A
sampling of their techniques can be found in the May 23rd issue of
Business Week. In a special report titled "Earthly Empires: How
evangelical churches are borrowing from the business playbook,"
Business Week shows how Christians are presenting the Gospel in new
and contemprary formats, adding more music t their services, opening
"mall churches," and using other innovations with telling effect.
Some of these methods would be appropriate for Asatru, while others
would violate our core values, but in either case the content is well
worth reading by those of us interested in spreading the Way of our
ancestors. (This article has stimulated creative discussions on the
new Yahoo group for AFA members, by the way.)

While studying the glitzy new Christian approaches, of course, we
should not forget that other, decidedly non-glitzy, religions like
Islam are growing just fine - and that the Hollywood approach may
not prove to have the staying power of these less glamorous methods of
growth.

One humbling but valuable graph in the Business Week article broke
down the American population by religious belief. Evangelical
Christianity is expanding rapidly while the mainline Protestant
churches were shrinking. But the most sobering revelation was that
non-Christian religions - defined as "Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim,
other" - amounted to a whopping five percent of Americans. Asatru?
Well, we didn't quite rate a specific mention.

The lesson is simple: Asatruar are numerically insignificant. We
must face this unpleasant truth, then (1) work to increase our numbers
while (2) trying to gain proportionally more clout for the numbers we
do have.

.and that is exactly what the Asatru Folk Assembly is all about.

POST-CHRISTIAN EUROPE, THE MUSLIM INVASION, AND THE RESPONSE OF
NATIVE EUROPEAN RELIGION

Another interesting trend is the emerging Third World domination of
Christianity. The book Megashift, by Christian author Jim Rutz,
claims that evangelical Christianity is sweeping through Africa,
Southeast Asia, China, and other places outside the Euro-American
sphere. So rapid is this growth - 8 percent per year - that Rutz
predicts that the whole planet will be essentially Christian within a
few decades. If mathematics were the only concern, he reports, the
number of Christians would equal the number of living humans in the
autumn of 2032.

It is not that simple, of course. What Mr. Rutz does not understand
is that Christianity has simply reverted to its original Third World
roots. The European form of Christianity, on its deathbed in
historical terms since Vatican Two, has essentially expired. Its
death leaves behind a religious vacuum that is being filled by
immigrant Muslims, while a distinctly non-European version of
Christianity is running rampant in places like Latin America and
Africa. The important demographic fact in Rutz' dreamworld is not the
admittedly dramatic growth of Christianity outside the West, but the
ongoing population implosion in Europe.

The good news in this scenario is that Europeans are finally shaking
off the hangover caused by massive doses of Middle Eastern
religiosity. What is not good is that it leaves our European kin
agnostic, rootless, and largely without defense against the current
Muslim invasion - an invasion different in style, but identical in
intent and result, from the onslaught of the Middle Ages. Sprung from
the same roots as Christianity and Judaism, Islam now infiltrates our
ancestral homeland from Granada and Marseilles to Stockholm.

This infiltration will turn into a tidal wave if Turkey is admitted to
the European Union. Turkey is not European in race or culture, and
only a tiny slice of the country is on the European continent.
Nevertheless, its acceptance into the EU will happen unless there is
an outpouring of anger from the European people. Every other nation
of the EU has a population that is in freefall, while that of Turkey
continues to climb. With the EU policy of free migration across
national borders within the Union, the result will be inevitable: The
Europe we have known will disappear.

Europe needs a religion to oppose this demographic disaster. A
revived form of militant Christianity, inspired by the Crusades, may
possibly step into this role, but this would be a tragedy. The
Germanic revival would be delayed for years, or even centuries. We
would simply be crushed in the flow of events.

There must be a revival of native European religion to fill the space
once occupied by Christianity. We who follow Germanic religion must
move quickly and forcefully to exploit this historically unique
opportunity. Otherwise, our ancestral homelands will suffer under the
renewed lash of a hostile, alien religion - whether Christian or Muslim.

Followers of Ancient European Religion Welcome Supreme Court Ruling

Nevada City, Calif., May 31, 2005 - Followers of an ancient European
faith with Norse roots today hailed the Supreme Court's unanimous
decision protecting the religious rights of prisoners. (Cutter v.
Wilkinson, No. 03-9877)

The ruling, which upholds the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized
Persons Act, recognizes the rights of prisoners to religious materials
and services regardless of their faith.

"For years, Asatru prisoners have struggled for the right to practice
our religion," said Stephen McNallen, director of the Asatru Folk
Assembly, a national religious organization dedicated to the
pre-Christian faith of Europe. "This decision will make it much harder
for prison administrators to deny them this right."

Asatru-a native pre-Christian European religion originally practiced
by the Anglo-Saxons, the Norse, and the Germanic tribes-has been a
legally recognized religion in the United States since 1972. The
Supreme Court Justices made it clear that little-known religions, or
those with very different beliefs from the mainstream, deserve the
same protection as those with many millions of followers.

McNallen believes that Asatru has a definite place in correctional
institutions. "The native spiritual path of the European peoples
carries incredible rehabilitative, transformative, and healing power
for those who approach it with openness and reverence," he said. "How
can it be in the interest of the state to deny us our spiritual
birthright in such a win-win situation?"

About the Asatru Folk Assembly: The Asatru Folk Assembly (AFA) was
established in 1994 to practice, promote, and further evolve the
indigenous European faith. The AFA's Director, Stephen A. McNallen,
was a pioneer in the revival of the Asatru religion, helping to bring
it to the United States in the late 1960s.

ANCIENT EUROPE COMING OUT OF THE DARK

We face many obstacles when we try convincing people to take Germanic
religion seriously. One of the greatest is the common impression that
our pre-Christian ancestors were primitive, ignorant, or both. After
all, how can we look to savages for guidance in spiritual issues or
anything else?

Archeology constantly refutes this flawed argument, but science never
quite seems to catch up with the lie: that advanced cultures
originated only in the East, and gradually spread the gifts of
civilization to Europe. This theory, once held by many scholars, is
known as "ex oriente lux," or "light from the East."

While the media often promotes negative stereotypes of early
Europeans, the game of demeaning anything produced by our northwest
European, non-Christian ancestors is really a very old one. It was in
full swing long before the first television set flickered into
existence - or before the invention of moveable type, for that matter.

During the heyday of the Roman Empire, anything Roman was thought to
be better than its equivalent in the Germanic or Celtic worlds. This
bias applied to material products, philosophy, and language.
High-born Britons went around giving the Roman salute and greeting
each other with "Ave!" When the remnants of the Empire were taken
over by the Christian church, this trend only intensified: Anything
Christian, or better yet Christian and Roman, was good. The culture
of the non-Christian lands of northwestern Europe was thought to be
inferior.

This attitude continues, with minor modifications, down to the
present. Students are taught that Western Civilization springs from
the Greeks and Romans, modified by the Christian and Jewish religions.
Europe north of the Alps was a barbarian wasteland and contributed
nothing of importance to our cultural inheritance. Transalpine
material culture was crude, its manners uncouth - so, obviously, the
spiritual conceptions of its inhabitants were likewise childish and
brutal.

All of this should have changed when scientists recalibrated the
Carbon 14 dating system in the late 1960's. Comparing very old tree
ring records with Carbon 14 readings from the wood itself, they found
that the native cultures of Europe were much older than previously
thought. The dates for the construction of Stonehenge and other
European megalithic structures, for example, were pushed thousands of
years into the past. It turned out that they were older than similar
sites in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The conclusion that
advanced cultures had evolved independently in Europe rather than
being derived from the "superior" cultures of the eastern
Mediterranean was unavoidable.

All this is described in an article in the November, 1977 issue of
_National Geographic_ titled "Ancient Europe is Older Than We Thought."

Have the textbooks picked up this information, almost thirty years
later? In a word, no. The textbook industry, usually so quick to
reinforce the political and cultural ideology of the moment, has for
some reason failed to report these findings. We - or rather, the
host culture in which we are embedded - seem incapable of saying
anything good about the peoples and cultures of northern Europe.

This bias has hurt our attempts to revive the faith and folkway of the
Germanic peoples. Since our ancestors were obviously stupid, or at
best merely ignorant, they have nothing to say to modern man. Their
brains didn't work as well as the gray matter of those Mediterraneans
and Middle Easterners. Truth and wisdom is found in Christianity and
Judaism. (Islam, at the moment, is somewhat unpopular - but still
acknowledged to have a higher level of development than those crude
Germans and Celts.)

We ought to note the irony of this anti-European prejudice.
Westerners are accused of denigrating the accomplishments of almost
all other peoples - Africans, Asians, American Indians, anyone not
like us. Yet this is exactly what we have done to our own ancestors!
The scientifically bankrupt "ex oriente lux" ideology has "Third
World-ized" the tribes and peoples north of the Mediterranean fringe.
This is done with the full approval of a political and educational
establishment that does not tolerate the mistreatment of other
cultures. Clearly, there is a fairness issue here.

It is our duty to correct this situation, and to shine a deserving
light of glory on our ancestral inheritance in both its material and
spiritual manifestations.

The information contained in the next article can be an addition to
our intellectual arsenal as we continue this battle.

EUROPE'S OLDEST CIVILIZATION?

News of Europe's oldest civilization has emerged from announcements in
the press over the last few weeks.

Seven thousand years ago, two thousand years before Stonehenge or the
pyramids, a network of huge religious complexes stretched across
central Europe. More than 150 of these sites have been discovered,
each characterized by massive earthworks stretching for up to half a
mile in length. They are surrounded by longhouses up to 50 meters
long, and the scope of the projects indicate a high level of social
organization. They may be the product of pan-tribal alliances, or
prototypical European states.

Chief archeologist for the three-year project defining this ancient
culture was Harald Staeuble, of the Saxony state government heritage
department.

Googling "Saxony" plus "Harald Staeuble" produced a handful of
returns, including
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,1564,1611474,00.html

Titled "Europe's Eastern German Cradle?" it begins with this sentence:
"While Greece and Italy have so far laid claim to Europe's oldest
civilizations, Germany's struggling eastern regions seem set to
challenge this."

The truth is on our side. We need only spread the world

YOUR HELP NEEDED TO SAVE NORWAY'S WOLVES!

The AFA's project to help save the last of Norway's wolves is a battle
for the wildness in our own souls.

Kimberley Remen, our representative in Norway, is at the front of that

"McNallen believes that Asatru has a definite place in correctional
institutions."

Really? Since when was that his view?

In that case why does the AFA application form state:

"Currently incarcerated individuals are not eligible for membership" ??

I agree White Horse. Although I love McNallens writings ive always known him to not really support prisioners at all, ive seen the quoted comments on the AFA membership application. Why would he change his views now?

I find it odd that he chose to visit a prison where we already have a hearth set up, Blod Tru Hearth AOR.

The members were told that they could meet him but declined. They only wanted to meet people who had helped them to get their rights and not those who have given them no support at all.

I do find it all very odd.

THE AFA'S RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS!

It's been ten weeks since we announced that the AFA was now a
membership organization. What have we done since then?

We've started an online Yahoo group for members.published the first
issue of our member's newsletter...begun work on a standardized
"Asatru 101" course which will eventually be available to the
public.sent out a news release in response to the Supreme Court's
decision on religious rights.helped, along with other Asatruar, get a
correction out of the New York Times.started an aggressive campaign on
behalf of Norway's endangered wolf population...organized a pool of
blood donors for our members.and gotten the AFA authorized to accept
donations on Ebay.

Not bad, considering that while doing all this we've continued
publishing AFA Updates (up to 953 subscribers as of this morning!) and
holding regular gatherings in northern California!

Isn't it time you joined the AFA and got in on all the action?

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

Last Monday, the Supreme Court issued decisions in two cases involving
the public display of the Ten Commandments. Both decrees were
ambiguous enough to please no one, and we can expect to hear much more
about this issue in the years to come.

The "America-is-a-Christian-nation" crowd tells us that the Ten
Commandments are the basis for governance in the United States, and
indeed, for all of Western Civilization. You and I know better than
that; my previous essays have touched on the pagan Anglo-Saxon roots
of our law, roots acknowledged by no less a luminary than Thomas
Jefferson.

There are two questions, however, that we need to ask regarding the
Ten Commandments:

(1) To what extent are they consistent with religious and political
freedom? In other words, what would be the effect on our freedoms if
the Ten Commandments were the literal law of the land?

(2) What unique contributions to ethics or morals do the Ten
Commandments make?

Commandments one and two tell us that religious freedom is only for
Christians, Jews, and Muslims. The first one states, approximately,
"I am the Lord thy God.Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
Obviously, Asatruar would be in deep trouble on that one! The second
commandment forbids the use of "graven images" in worship (Many Jews
and Muslims take it farther and consider any artistic representations
of the human form to be sinful). Germanic religious customs, on the
other hand, have traditionally included anthropomorphic images ranging
from crude petroglyphs to sculpture in wood, stone and bone. If the
Commandments were law today, our religious freedoms would once more be
curtailed.

How can anyone who believes in religious freedom think that these two
commandments should be held up as the foundation of American
government? Theoretically, you and I would be fined or imprisoned.or
stoned, or burned.if these dictates were taken seriously. Most of the
Christians I know, being basically decent people, would not go so far.
Yet, if they truly believe this to be the heart and soul of America's
laws, how could they not? Do they believe in the tribal laws of the
Hebrews, or don't they?

The third commandment forbids us from swearing a false oath in the
name of Yahweh. Fair enough; I don't intend to swear ANY oath to
Yahweh, false or otherwise, so this one doesn't concern me.

Commandment number four, on the other hand, constitutes another
infringement on individual rights and on religious rights
specifically. It decrees that we are to refrain from work on the
Sabbath. The restrictions on human freedom are obvious: Many of us
are old enough to remember the "blue laws" that determined what we
could or could not buy on Sundays. Entire store aisles were roped off
on the day of Christian worship, and making "religiously incorrect"
purchases was a crime!

However, the issues raised by the fourth commandment go far beyond the
legality of buying toothpaste on the Sunday. Forcing others to comply
with Christian religious teaching is a grievous violation of rights
and conscience and, in effect, amounts to coerced subservience to the
Judeo-Christian God.

In civilized countries, commandments one through four are no longer
matters of civil law so, fortunately, we won't be going to prison for
violating them. The point, however, is not imminent prison sentences
but simply that it is an insult to Western law and government to take
such primitive, totalitarian dictates are "the foundation of our
society."

The remaining six commandments do not require much attention, because
they are all laudable, commonsense rules for human behavior. We are
not to steal, or murder, of commit adultery, or tell lies to
incriminate our neighbor. These are fine precepts..but they are
unexceptional. They are the staple of human custom and law,
duplicated among many peoples - not the least our own ancestors!
They are as much a part of the Germanic heritage as they are the
Semitic, and why we should import them from strangers remains a mystery.

In a tribal Semitic society, the Ten Commandments perhaps made sense.
Their authority flows from the top downward. No questioning is
permitted. Rights flow from God, not from votes in the assembly of
freemen. God is "totally other" from his human creations, rather than
being kin with mutual obligations bound by thew and subject to the
power of Wyrd. But for the men and women of Germania, the
Commandments as a whole are not appropriate. By establishing law that
springs from divine fiat, the Commandments make freedom, in the sense
our ancestors knew it, impossible.

We are left with two conclusions. First, the specific commandments
that make the Decalogue unique - the ones dealing with the
relationship of God and man - would result in a theocratic
dictatorship if they were applied as the law of the land. Second, the
much more commonsense commandments forbidding false oaths, theft and
the like are not unique and are found in other legal systems,
including the law codes of our ancestors.

The Ten Commandments comprise an interesting legal document. They are
relevant to American history because so many Americans have been
trained to them. But, paradoxically, they are not in accord with a
free society nor are they "the foundation of America's legal system."

America deserves better than that.

SIGN OUR PETITION TO SAVE NORWAY'S WOLVES!

There is good news and bad news concerning the endangered Norwegian
wolves.

Bad news first: Another wolf has died since our last AFA Update.
This means that there is now ONE intact wolf family known to exist in
Norway.

But there is good news, too.

Our project is now represented online by a Yahoo group,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/norwegian_wolf/. Here you'll find
updates on the wolf project as well as photos, various files, and
other resources.

We have a petition online, as well! Better than that - we have two
different ones:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/399085910 and
http://www.gopetition.com/online/6693.html.

Please take a moment and sign them! And pass them on to as many
people as you can. They represent one of the AFA's first activism
efforts as a membership organization - let's make this a resounding
success!

Kimberley, our Norwegian representative, wrote early this morning that
we have had 371 signatures in the three days our petitions have been
online. Furthermore, we have had the first offer of help from a
Scandinavian Asatru organization! We are off to a good start.but it
is only a start, and we need your help! Please sign our petitions.and
drop a line to Kimberley@troi.ws to find out what else you can do to
help. She's doing a magnificent job but she can't do it alone.

We can make a difference!
