I had a thought about maybe having a O.com contest about getting back to optimal fitness. And if brave enough posting before and after pics {cringe
} lol..
I know I could, and after Yule need to loose a few.
anyone interested?
the reward?
How about small children will not run screaming from your porseen shadow?
The Cal Tech sizemology lab will not have your phone on speed dial?
Herds of cattle will not run at your meere mention?
Hagadaz no longer makes a special trip to your house with an oversize truck?
Japaneese tourists will not run through the streets poinitng at you murmuring Godzirra..
You will not have to pry your wife out of the divet left in the mattress after you make woopie?
No longer to cut yourself shaving and pie filling ozzes out?
Hmmm a win win situation no?
Who is with me?

I would probably have a good chance to win the contest. I have at least 20 pounds to lose, to build up more muscles in my left arm (yup, the lecture notes have only helped the right arm :D ) and in other places, and I basically have to become the perfect athlete before the Austrian army takes a look at me in March.

Indeed. Nice way of putting it

I actually could do with ADDING some weight. My doc reckons I am at least half a stone under. I have decided to start training again in January. My new place of work has it's own leisure centre, so quite conveniant. Half a stone of muscle would be nice.

Austrian Army? I see that you don't live in Austria.....but in any event I hear that Austria strongly supports the European New Right. It is the only European country that isn't stuck on the whole PC thing. Where do I sign?

What about me!

190 pounds and I'm only 5'6"

Just very stocky with a high muscle density.

I'm a Hooker in Rugby, so it comes in handy. Well, until I have to run more than 50 yards in one go!

Well, they will only kind of observe me for a few mins and then send me off for another 4 1/2 years due to Uni...useless :swinghamm

Oh well, Austria is not much less PC than all the others. Look at the damn government... :shake:

The population is much less PC than in other sates tho :)

I myself am a hefty 255 lbs., luckily I'm 6'4" so I don't seem too obese.
Unfortunately I no longer get the exercise I once did at my job. I recently went from being a package handler (very physical) to a hazmat specialist (very un-physical). Guess I'll have to lay off the red meat and beer. :(

I am 5' 6" and 175 lbs. When I was in the army I was 156. When I got out I was lazy for a while and I jumped up to 220. I dropped alot of weight through full contact fighter training. My legs are very large and are envied by body builders, especially my calves.
My metabolism requires that I work out and be active on a regular basis. My personal program is outlined as such:

I make use of a "Maxex" format, th.i. I will combine slow grinding exercises (=strength) with fast explosive exercises (=power)

_Phase One: Maximum Power / Strength_

Bench Press + Medicine Ball

Sqaut + Jump Sqaut

Dead Lift + Dumbell Swing

_Phase Two: Endurance Power / Strength_

Hindu Push Up + Clapper Pushup

Hindu Sqaut + Frogger Jump

Crab Walk + Bear Crawl

Pull Ups + Dips

_Daily_

Swiss Ball Crunches / Ab Roller

Bridges / Neck Raise

Thor's Hammer / Weaver Stick

1 hr of Mauy Thai

1 hr of Jiu Jitsu

1 hr of Freestyle (sparring, grappling, ect.).

_Typical Diet_

Alot of Fruit and Vegetables, Some meat (not a vegetarian right now, will eat some fish and eggs), a little starch, absolutely no suger or *****. I will usually have fruit and yogurt for breakfast, a mixed garden salad for lunch, and a good hearty dinner...like a nice slab of salmon with some brown rice and streamed veggies or some tofu that is sauted in coconut milk, ginger, lemon grass, fish sauce, and red curry mix with some brown rice. I like to eat nuts for snacks between meals. I will also go on fasts as a way to "cleanse" myself, I like freshly squeezed and raw fruit and vegetable juices and will sip these during my fasts. I also like the different teas, especially the naturally decafinated ones.....lemon ginger, apple cinomin, licorice and blueberry are my favorites.

Before every workout I will warm up with some Biomechanical Exercises (see Body Flow by Scott Sonnon) and will cool down with some stretches (see Relax into Stretch by Pavel Tastouline).

Smart does not always eqaul physically weak.

Well my emphasis is build. My stamina is very good. My strength is decent, I just don't have the build. I worked out for two years, three times a week, and still could not put on build. Probably not genetically disposed for muscle. I have an athletes skeleton.

My plan for new year is to work out at the gym three times a week, its where I work so no problem there. I am on three shifts mornings, afternoons, and nights. Swim, I hate swimming, but it is good all over exercise. Probably do that before I work out. I jog every other day anyway. I am considering taking up fencing as well. I cycle everywhere. I hike in the Peaks every month.

No dietary changes needed. I have a balanced diet meat, veg, I eat fruit every day, drink orange juice. I drink at least two pints of raw milk a day. I dont smoke, dont take *****, drink rarely.

Well when I'm on afternoon or night shift I can go before I start my work. Getting tanked up before shift is an obvious no no. But mornings well I knock off at 3PM. Tempting. :D

The company I work for have some decent sports clubs and facilities. Archery and fencing appeal. I used to be a decent hooker at university, although not quite stocky enough I preferred wings, when I played Rugby. When I'm back in tip-top shape I'll probably join the works Rugby club.

Well I am up for it. After Gunnar (#4) I was in the best shape of my life, then gained a bit with Hakon (#5), but was in Muay Thai Kick Boxing and Ju Jitsu (spelling?), and Escrima stick fighting for a year and slimmed down to wicked shape again....OH...but then I got involved with several orgs and sat...sat...sat...and had to go to school, work, and home school 5 kids  ...so I "grew" again....then had Freydis (#6)...then....got in a car accident!! So now I am able to do some limited exercises and have started losing weight...So I want to be as I was after Gunnar or Hakon by Summer Solstice.... 6 months...I think I can do it!

So...would you accept a girl :).

Put a little in the middle, easy enough to lose now that I am back to swinging from ladder to ladder on a construction site singing "My Fair Lady" to the other workers. Legs are still large and firm. I am game..... 5'7 200 pounds of man..... mostly c....... oops almost slipped...... I thought it was funny......

Ma I have neglected the thread...
Well...
I think the idea is sound because if we are not fit as a people, then we are not fit as a faith..
To save egos even mine lol {right now you do not want to see this oiled up in a speedo}, we can post pics after it is all over, OR we can just post after pics in the end. I do not see this as a winner take all because in the end if you are fit then you win hands down.
We can have catagories, most weight lost, most gains, best shape, etc etc, or just do it to get fit and use it as a support forum.
I like the support forum idea, but we can do an after contest "awards" thingy..
It can start Jan 1st 06 and go through June 1st a six month run, not too short andnot too long..
Diet preference is up to you, atkins, zone etc etc up to you.Workout method,
up to you. No need to become Mr olympia, just get fit.
any thoughts?

I'm in with the girl power! I was way overweight and it began affecting both my mood and my health dramatically! Lab tests showed that my blood was not absorbing sugars and turning them into energy. I didn't want to take medications, so the doc said the only alternative was to lose 50 lbs (and I'm only 5 ft tall). So I lost 60 and felt so amazingly better! But now I've gained back 15 and I just need to get back to it and turn it back into a downward trend instead of an upward trend. The good thing is that I know how to do it. It's the mental motivation right now and this thread will help remind me. Kathy - I don't know what kind of injuries you had from your accident but can you walk? I started by changing my diet - cutting out all sugar and white flour products. Lean meat, Low-fat dairy. Whole grains but very limited. Mostly vegies (I know 100 variations of salad - quite good!) and fruit but whole fruit - no fruit juices. Eat every 2 hours - meal, snack, meal, snack, meal. Keep portions small. And I walked - 20 minutes per day at first, four days a week. Then 30 minutes a day, five days a week. After losing about 25 lbs, I began doing some work outs with weights, building muscle, which burns calaries faster. After another 10 lb loss, I added a NIA dance class. I still do the dance class twice a week and some walking but need to walk more and get back to gym. But starting by just walking, if you can do that, does a lot!! Zelda

I used to be fairly over weight, 190 lbs at 5"11 (mostly fat). I started lifting weights and lost 40 lbs, then eventually gained it back plus some to become 200 lbs of muscle. I have since slacked off and am back down to 180 lbs of muscle, and it doesn't look very promising; I pulled a muscle in my rotator cuff (behind the shoulder blade) today. It's fairly painful, you never realize how much you use that muscle until you hurt it. If I can find a place for my weight bench in my tiny room, I will start working out again.

Weight Watchers is the way to go. I'm sceptical about Atkins. The idea behind it is sound: eat the way people way back did, but the problem is, we don't lead the same lifestyle. People back then had to run and catch their food, we just reach in the fridge.

Well metabolism wise Atkins was the only thing that wored for me, and it killed my appetite totally, I had to remind meyself to eat lol.
The only other really effective diet I ahve ever tried and used was by a man named Garm, whom had a powerlifting site called IRON GARM.
It was based on WFR, Whole Fresh Raw.
You could go to a Grocery salad bar in the morning and load a container with . Tuna salad, lettuce , veggies and nuts, eat through out the day. Protein is taken in by way of a really good wuality shake { I like Low carb Grow, and muscle milk} , also through raw sources baked like salmon and chicken. It was pretty good.
Although it did not hold a candle to dissentarry that I got in Panama lol while going through jungle training lol.... watch that weight drop lol, I was like a human boster rocket..

I'm needing to gain muscle-weight. In the military, it was easy to find time to work out and gain muscle. Now, in the real world with a still-very-active metabolism and no workouts, it's hard to maintain. Joined a gym today but, after reading the fine print on the contract, I believe I'll be cancelling.

For a family basic package I'll be paying $89 a month (hey, this gym has a movie theater filled with treadmills and bikes...and...they play movies...pretty neat, work your body and rot your brain). It turns out that, per the contract's fine print, I'll have to pay $10 EXTRA per visit after 4PM due to the fact that my family and I aren't "elite" members. Ho hum.

However, after the exams, I'll pay the 70£ annual fee for the swimming pool and gym hall. (or £1.10 per day it is), and go swimming every second day, do gymwork the other ones. I'll probably also try to schedule a morning seaside walk, if my lectures are not too early.

Kathy - It depends on how fast your kids run! Actually, ANY exercise counts which is why doing even small acts like parking in the farthest parking space from a building or using the stairs instead of the elevator or walking to the corner store instead of driving, make a difference. But it is also important to do some kind of exercise that really gets your heart rate going - brisk walking, dancing, running, bicycling, etc. I've discovered a kind of dance called "NIA" which is a combination of aerobics, martial arts, and tai chi. A great variety of music, including symphonic music, Gregorian chants, jazz, rock n roll, etc. I lost 50 lbs just walking for 30 minutes three times a week and taking two NIA classes per week. (Plus eating healthy, of course!) NIA class locations can be found at their website at www.nia-nia.com Zelda

Ok, I REALLY need some advice on how to get inspired to exercise.

My depression keeps me from wanting to do much of anything most days.

It's hard to break free of the cycle.

I 'm down about 10lbs now :D

slow and steady it took time to put te weight on, it will take time to take it off

enslaved: Depression is something we all go though at one point or another
(example: I'm 37 last year I almost lost my house, my car, and everything else with a wife and 2 children. Working full time and just not making enough.
watching it all slowly slip through my fingers. not to mention gaining a bunch
of wieght ,being depressed. just thinking about it ......)

What helped me is keep your eye on your end goal, the day to day small stuff
will wear you down. As for exercise don't punish yourself.
Do what you can when you can.

Maybe take a walk at sunrise
( 2 for 1 here a little exercise and a little time outside)

Oh by the way after kicking my depression last year things turned around
in a pretty big way my business grew by 100% last year :yipee:
