R. Pane, a monk who brought tobacco to Europe!
I am convinced that smoking and chewing is a very un-European practice, a quite new thing in our history. Tobacco has nothing to do with our faith, like it did with the AmerIndians, or with our culture.
For Odinists at large, they should refrain from the use of tobacco (smoking), because it has nothing to do with our faith, culture, and is bad for health!
If it could be used in a beneficial medical treatment in a herbal form then it could be something good for Vinlanders, but that aspect needs to be studied further. Other than that, it is a money trap! (that money needs to go into our Odinist realm).

I don't see what would be wrong with it. After all, our forefathers, not known to our knowledge, may have enjoyed the consuming of Tobacco when across the Atlantic.
Also, a kind of Tobacco made from Nile plants had existed since long, and it had been important into Europe before, and pipes existed before the Explorers.
Also, IMO, if smoking is classed as un-European, so should be the use of pepper and the use of potatoes, as pepper originally came from Asia and Potatoes from South America. Therefore, if an Asatruar is not allowed to smoke, he should not be allowed to eat potatoes, therefore a, to me, pretty dull idea.

Exactly. I was thinking about that as well. It is one's choice. And, being a smoker, I am a bit su****ious about these kinds of topics. IMO, I don't see what is terribly wrong enough - As long as you maintain your physical equilibrium in one way or another, it should be fine.

I understand how you feel, and you made a good point. I just wanted to point out how it came to our culture and point out its benefits, and maybe this will give other Odinists some food for thought on topic to help them out if they are a smoker or not.

I haven't smoked regularly in ages (years upon years). Although I have had a pipe of tobacco or a cigar once in while (and even this, I haven't had any in years and have no desire to).
I will not touch cigarettes though. They are the worst of the worst. Much of cigarette "tobacco" is actually paper made with scraps from the manufacture of pipe and cigar tobacco and other stuff. It's impregnated with chemicals (nasty stuff) and shredded to make the "tobacco".
If you want real tobacco, go for most kinds of pipe or cigar tobacco. And don't inhale. These two aren't supposed to be inhaled anyway. Draw it into the mouth only.
Of course, the best advice is to not smoke at all. Even real tobacco will give you mouth cancer. Just stay away from it if you can.
I effectively don't smoke and probably never will again.

Our ancestors didn't do a lot of the things we do. It's just a personal decision, not a religious one. Now if it said in the sagas somewhere that Odin looks down upon the man who smokes I might change my mind, but it's just a changing world and we need to adapt. Just because my ancestors didn't eat candy bars doesn't mean I shouldn't.
On the subject of tobacco, has anyone tried the new Camel Silvers??

Smooth and mellow, very nice taste to them. I would prefer to roll but I don't have the time. Camel Silvers are one of the nicest smokes I've seen around.

A coupla things:
Potatoes and pepper: they are not unhealthy in and of themselves (barring over use), but even smoking one cigarette is.
"As long as you maintain your physical equilibrium in one way or another, it should be fine.": You are actually condoning smoking? It isn't ok. If this excuse makes you feel better about your decision to continue to smoke...fine, but don't actually try to convince others that smoking isn't "terribly wrong". It is.
I agree it is a personal choice and not a religious (I like the candy bar analogy...LOL), but also know that people will make choices to not hang out with smokers because their habit isn't just theirs...it affects everyone around them (second hand smoke and all). Our house has strict rules about smoking and friends. They are my friends and all but they aren't going to smoke in our house and certainly not around my children. Garbage in, Garbage out.
My hubby just quit "copenheroin" his nick for chew. It is another terrible habit. He usually just chewed at work mostly because when he came home the kids would give him ENDLESS **** about chewing. He says now he totally appreciates our harrassment and care...really ate at him and helped him to stop.
Basically, you can do what you are going to do, but to actually make excuses and try and defend such a destructive habit is ludicrous.

Oh good Gods....we are going to discuss this in Daily Living? Maybe move your discussion of choice of cancer sticks to the general discussion area, please...LOL

Well, I smoke...quit once for 57 days...until I found myself working in a place where everybody chained smoked....ended up threatening a co-worker with some of the nasty machinary to get a cigarette...sigh.
I want to quit...keep switching brands, rolling my own, whatever to cut down. Once in a while I try the cold-turkey thing and friends and loved ones end up offering me cigarettes because my mood gets dangerously nasty...
I'll keep trying, though...

I smoke the occasional cigar or pipe, and sometimes I'll roll my own with un-altered tobacco. Yes it is unhealthy, I'm not even going to try to make excuses. I am however glad that I can say occasional, if I ever started feeling a craving for nicotine I think I'd have to quit, at least for a while. In my opinion addiction is unbecoming conduct for a heathen. Addiction to any drug, nicotine, caffien, alcohol, and so on. Personally I don't even feel comfortable using ***** the doctor prescribes.
And Hved makes a comment about how much I drink in 5.......4........3........2..... :p
